Regional Outlook — TAS1: Sunday 30 August 2026
Tasmania's spot price sits at $86.65/MWh as at 06:30 AEST, tracking near the middle of a volatile overnight-to-morning range. Prices collapsed to negative territory between 01:30-06:00 AEST (troughing at -$20.99/MWh around 04:00), a function of low overnight demand (sub-800 MW) meeting strong hydro and wind output. As demand climbed through the morning ramp — crossing 1000 MW by 08:00 and now at 1166 MW — prices lifted sharply, briefly touching $120.56/MWh at 15:55 and $101-102/MWh through the 08:30-09:00 window before settling in the $80-95/MWh band for the current period.
Generation is being met by hydro at 1129.5 MW (the dominant source), wind contributing 223.6 MW, and gas OCGT filling the balance at 124.0 MW — total scheduled generation of 1477.1 MW against 1166.4 MW regional demand, with the surplus reflecting Basslink export flows. Renewable penetration sits at 91.6%, consistent with the past 24 hours where the figure has ranged between 77-92% depending on overnight gas dispatch. Carbon intensity is 0.0546 tCO2/MWh, well below the NEM average and stable through the day after peaking near 0.15 tCO2/MWh during the 03:00-05:00 low-demand window when gas contribution rose proportionally.
Predispatch signals a firming trajectory into the evening peak: forecast prices climb to $92.85/MWh by 21:00, easing slightly to $87-88/MWh through 22:00-22:30, before falling away overnight to sub-$15/MWh by 23:30 and turning negative ($-3.15/MWh) between 02:00-05:00 tomorrow — mirroring today's overnight pattern. A sharp morning ramp is forecast for 31 August, with prices spiking to $130.71/MWh at 08:00 and holding above $126/MWh through 09:00-10:30 before easing back through the afternoon. Weather supports this: tomorrow's outlook shows modest solar potential (4.4%) and weak wind (1.1%), tightening renewable supply margins during the morning peak. Load-shifting opportunities are concentrated in the 01:30-06:00 window, where AEMO's flagged negative pricing offers up to $135/MWh in savings versus peak rates for flexible load.
No active market notices directly affect TAS1 today. The most recent Tasmania-specific notice was a 21 August lightning-related contingency reclassification on the Farrell-Reece and Tungatinah-Waddamana lines, both since cancelled. The only forthcoming systems notice of note is AEMO's MarketNet VPN firewall upgrade scheduled for 3 September (10:00-15:00 AEST), which may briefly disrupt variable VPN connections but carries no dispatch impact.
