Regional Outlook — QLD1: Sunday 30 August 2026
**Queensland Regional Deep-Dive — Monday 31 August 2026, 06:30 AEST**
The Queensland spot price sits at $87.73/MWh, tracking near the top of its overnight range after a sharp overnight collapse. Prices fell as low as -$8.89/MWh between 01:00-04:30 AEST as demand troughed near 3,760-4,100 MW, before recovering through the morning ramp to a peak of $102.09/MWh at 08:10 AEST as demand climbed above 7,200 MW. Current demand of 6,499 MW is up from the overnight low but below yesterday's morning peak, and the price has settled into a $75-90/MWh band through the past few hours — consistent with typical black coal and gas marginal pricing once solar generation fades in the evening.
Generation mix is currently dominated by black coal at 5,278 MW (77% of the 7,335 MW total), with wind contributing 1,249 MW (17%) and battery storage at 604 MW discharging to support the evening peak. Gas OCGT adds a modest 111 MW, hydro 63 MW, and solar has dropped to just 29 MW as the evening period sets in. Renewable penetration sits at 26.5%, in line with the carbon intensity reading of 0.6431 tCO2/MWh — both figures reflect the post-sunset generation profile, with renewable share having ranged from a low of ~21.4% mid-afternoon to a high of 54% overnight when demand troughed and wind/hydro made up a larger share of a smaller total.
Predispatch forecasts show prices easing toward zero and into negative territory overnight (-$3 to -$3.76/MWh between 01:00-05:00 AEST tomorrow) as demand falls away, mirroring last night's pattern. The morning ramp on 31 August is forecast to be sharper than today's: prices lift from $9.66/MWh at 06:00 AEST to $116.30/MWh by 08:00 AEST and peak near $116.72/MWh at 10:00 AEST, before easing back to the $62-72/MWh band through the afternoon and evening. Five low-price windows are flagged between 00:00-06:00 AEST tomorrow, each offering $117-120/MWh savings versus peak for flexible load — all rated low risk with zero carbon intensity given the overnight renewable/battery contribution.
On notices, a non-conformance was recorded for unit MPP_1 in QLD1 (-43 MW, 17:20-17:35 AEST 30 August) — no ongoing operational impact expected. A market systems change affecting MarketNet variable VPN connections is scheduled for 03 September, 10:00-15:00 AEST, with brief reconnection interruptions possible; this doesn't affect physical dispatch. North Queensland system strength constraint equations were updated on 27 August (Q_STR_NIL series replacing prior IDs), relevant to any traders active on NQ transmission-constrained positions. No active QLD-specific intervention events or transfer limit variations are in place this morning. Weather today is mild (max 21.8°C, min 13.1°C) with modest solar potential (14.7%) and light wind (1.2%), suggesting renewable output through midday will be capacity-constrained rather than weather-driven — worth watching against the forecast $85-116/MWh morning peak.
