Commodity Demand — NSW1: Thursday 30 July 2026
NSW spot price sits at $190.04/MWh as at 06:30 AEST, with demand at 10,047 MW and climbing through the morning ramp. The overnight trough saw demand fall to a low of 6,512 MW around 14:45 AEST (settlement time in UTC corresponds to early NSW morning), with prices compressing to $19-30/MWh as minimum demand periods allowed low-cost generation to clear the market. Current conditions show a cold morning — 6.6°C with heating demand at 11.4 — consistent with the steep overnight-to-morning demand build now underway.
The demand-price relationship today is highly non-linear above 10,500 MW. Through yesterday's evening peak, demand climbed from 9,907 MW to a high near 11,480 MW between 08:55-09:00 AEST equivalent settlement, and price responded aggressively — spiking to $499.96/MWh at 11:35 UTC settlement (11,442 MW) and hitting $482.42/MWh shortly after. Every 500 MW of incremental demand above 10,500 MW is adding $50-150/MWh to clearing price, indicating the region is working through progressively higher-cost marginal capacity, likely gas peaking and battery discharge, once black coal and hydro baseload are fully committed. Current generation mix confirms this stack: black coal is providing 7,064 MW, hydro 1,352 MW, and battery output at 747 MW, with wind contributing 427 MW and solar minimal at 105 MW given early morning conditions and only 4% cloud cover but low sun angle.
AEMO's 5-minute forecast curve points to elevated prices persisting through the morning peak, with $299.99/MWh forecast at both 21:00 and 21:30 UTC target times (approximately 07:00-07:30 AEST), before easing to $69.99/MWh by 22:30 UTC as demand recedes. The forecast trajectory then shows prices holding in the $57-135/MWh band through the day, with a secondary lift to $130-137/MWh forecast for the 08:00-09:30 AEST window as the morning demand ramp peaks again. Renewable penetration sits at 27.04% currently with carbon intensity at 0.6413 tCO2/MWh, both improving from the 20.11% renewable share seen at 17:00 AEST as wind picks up overnight. No demand-side notices are active for NSW today, though an SA-region transmission constraint (Belalie-Davenport 275kV outage) and inter-regional transfer limits on the VIC-SA interconnector are current market conditions worth monitoring for any secondary price impact on interconnector flows into NSW.
