Assurance over AASB S2 sustainability reports is being phased in between 1 January 2025 and 30 June 2030. In the early years, limited assurance applies to a narrowing set of disclosures, beginning with Scope 1, Scope 2 and governance.
From financial years commencing on or after 1 July 2030, reasonable assurance — the higher level under the AUASB standard ASSA 5010 — applies to all climate-related disclosures in the report. Reasonable assurance is a materially higher bar than limited assurance, so the quality, traceability and audit trail of underlying data (including factor versioning for Scope 2) becomes critical well before the 2030 date.
All entities preparing AASB S2 sustainability reports (Groups 1, 2 and 3), for financial years commencing on or after 1 July 2030.
For financial years commencing on or after 1 July 2030, under AUASB ASSA 5010.
Limited assurance provides negative confidence over a narrow set of disclosures during the phase-in. Reasonable assurance is a higher, positive level of confidence and applies to all climate-related disclosures from 1 July 2030.
Build defensible methodology and an audit trail now — including DCCEEW factor version traceability for Scope 2 — so the data can withstand reasonable assurance when it arrives.
