NEM Overview: Monday 14 September 2026
Spot prices sit in a tight $68-92/MWh band across the NEM this morning, with WA1 the outlier at $91.40 and TAS1 the cheapest at $68.31. NSW1 leads the eastern regions at $82.84 against 7,396 MW demand, QLD1 sits at $78.54, VIC1 at $71.02, and SA1 at $69.18. The VIC1-NSW1 interconnector is currently binding at 823 MW flow (against an 824 MW export limit), pushing Victorian generation north and helping keep NSW1 prices in check relative to what its coal-heavy stack might otherwise produce.
Renewable penetration is uneven across regions this morning. TAS1 is running at 90.6% renewable (hydro 774 MW, wind 420 MW) with carbon intensity of just 0.061 tCO2/MWh, and SA1 sits at 81.0% renewable (wind 988 MW, battery 166 MW) at 0.112 tCO2/MWh. VIC1 is at 38.8% renewable with wind contributing 2,277 MW alongside 3,688 MW of brown coal. NSW1 (16.8% renewable) and QLD1 (22.5% renewable) remain more thermal-dominated, with black coal running 5,121 MW and 5,106 MW respectively. The gridIQ renewable penetration score sits at 49.7% NEM-wide, with grid stress reading elevated at 76.8.
SA1 remains under active AEMO intervention for voltage control — a direction to AGL's Torrens Island B4 unit requires it synchronised and following dispatch targets from 0730 hrs today through to 1600 hrs, and AEMO has flagged a further foreseeable intervention risk in SA from 0930 hrs today, also voltage-related. This is the fourth consecutive day of SA voltage directions, indicating a persistent thin-synchronous-generation issue in that region that traders should watch, particularly given SA's high wind/battery share can leave insufficient synchronous plant online during certain dispatch periods. Separately, AEMO has flagged a forecast Minimum System Load (MSL1) condition for SA1 on 19 September, with demand potentially falling to -111 MW around 1330 hrs — a reminder that minimum demand management remains a live issue in that region even as today's focus is the voltage intervention.
Weather today offers limited renewable upside: cloud cover is elevated in VIC1 (17%, rising to 38% average) and SA1 (70% current, easing to 57%), capping solar output in the south, while NSW1 and QLD1 have clearer skies (0-2% cloud) supporting stronger solar potential through the day. Wind potential is modest everywhere except VIC1 (6.5-14.7%). Expect NSW1 and QLD1 demand to lean on coal and gas peaking plant through the day, with SA1's voltage constraint the key operational item to monitor into the afternoon.
