Regional Outlook — NSW1: Tuesday 8 September 2026
NSW spot price sits at $89.89/MWh at 06:30 AEST, with demand at 8,034 MW as the morning ramp builds. Overnight prices were soft, dipping into single digits and even briefly negative territory around 07:30-08:00 AEST last night, before climbing sharply through the 16:30-18:00 AEST window when the market peaked above $190/MWh on rising demand past 8,500 MW. The current price sits mid-range relative to that overnight low and evening high, reflecting the typical morning demand build.
Generation mix is currently coal-dominant: black coal contributes 4,608 MW, the largest single source, against wind at 694 MW, batteries at 639 MW, hydro at 441 MW, solar at just 41 MW (reflecting the pre-dawn/low-light period), and gas OCGT contributing a modest 50 MW. Renewable penetration sits at 28.03%, recovering from a low of 8.61% at 16:55 AEST yesterday as wind and battery output firmed through the evening. Carbon intensity reads 0.6315 tCO2/MWh, down from a peak of 0.8022 tCO2/MWh yesterday afternoon, tracking inversely with renewable share as expected.
Predispatch forecasts point to prices holding in the $80-97/MWh band through the morning peak (07:00-11:00 AEST), before easing toward $55-76/MWh across the midday and afternoon as solar generation lifts with improving cloud cover forecast for today (71% average cloud, easing over coming days). Overnight prices tonight are forecast to fall into negative territory again between 00:00 and 02:00 AEST, with forecast RRPs as low as -$3.20/MWh, consistent with continued strong wind output (22.7% average wind potential forecast for today) and low demand. Load-shifting windows show clear value in that 00:00-03:00 AEST period, with savings of up to $111/MWh versus peak pricing.
No active AEMO market notices are specific to NSW today beyond routine network items. The most relevant regional note is the cancelled reclassification of the Bayswater-Mt Piper 500kV lines contingency event (lightning-related, resolved 5 September) — no ongoing constraint. Current NSW-specific interventions and directions are centred on SA (Torrens Island voltage support) and do not directly affect NSW dispatch today. Weather conditions are mild, with a top of 18.5°C and moderate wind potential improving through the day, supporting the expected midday price relief.
