Regional Outlook — NSW1: Friday 4 September 2026
NSW spot price sits at $56.48/MWh as at 6:25pm AEST, easing back after a volatile evening peak that saw prices spike to $299.99/MWh around 6:05am and swing through a wide band ($0.06 to $280) during the morning ramp. Demand currently reads 6,626 MW, down from a daily peak near 8,600 MW recorded mid-morning. Overnight minimum demand troughed below 4,550 MW around 4am, driving prices into negative territory for an extended stretch (-$18.51/MWh at several intervals) as low overnight load met strong renewable output.
Generation mix at the 8pm interval shows black coal dominant at 3,680 MW, followed by wind at 1,586 MW, battery storage discharging 393 MW, hydro at 77 MW, and gas OCGT contributing a modest 41 MW, with gas CCGT and solar negligible given the evening timing. Renewable penetration sits at 35.6%, consistent with wind carrying the bulk of the clean generation load this evening. Carbon intensity reads 0.5653 tCO2/MWh, down from a midday peak near 0.65 tCO2/MWh when coal ran hardest to cover the 8,500 MW demand plateau between 8am and 1pm.
Predispatch forecasts point to a sharp overnight price collapse, with negative prices expected from 9:30pm through to around 6am tomorrow, bottoming near -$18.51/MWh in several half-hour blocks between 10pm and 5am. Prices are forecast to recover through tomorrow's morning ramp, climbing to $69.37/MWh by 7:30am and stabilising in the low $70s/MWh through the middle of the day, before easing back to the low $40s/MWh by late afternoon. This pattern mirrors today's overnight trough and mirrors typical low-demand, high-wind conditions forecast for early Saturday morning.
Active notices relevant to NSW include an inter-regional transfer limit variation on the Sydney West–Vineyard No. 29 330kV line following a short-notice outage at 5pm yesterday, invoking constraint set N-SWVY_29 across NSW1-QLD1 and VIC1-NSW1 interconnectors — worth monitoring for any knock-on transfer capacity impacts. A non-conformance notice was also issued for unit WTAHB1 in NSW1 (-18 MW deviation, 14:40–14:50 yesterday). No credible contingency events are currently active within NSW1 itself, though reclassified contingency events in VIC1 (Yallourn-Rowville lines, since cancelled) and SA (Para-Templers West/Magill-Torrens Island lines, due to severe weather) may influence interconnector flows and pricing dynamics into NSW over the coming trading day.
