Regional Outlook — NSW1: Thursday 3 September 2026
NSW spot price sits at $293.79/MWh as at 06:30 AEST, capping off a sharp evening ramp from a $146/MWh plateau around 19:55 through $184, $230 and $274/MWh in successive intervals. This is a stark reversal from the negative and near-zero pricing that dominated overnight trade on 2-3 September, when prices sat in the -$10 to $0/MWh range for roughly six hours as demand troughed near 4,550-5,100 MW. Demand has since climbed back to 7,673 MW, tracking the typical morning ramp, and the current price reflects tightening supply-demand balance rather than any single outage event.
Generation mix at the latest interval (19:55) shows black coal dominant at 5,221 MW, followed by hydro at 778 MW, battery storage at 522 MW, wind at 274 MW, gas OCGT at 49 MW, and solar tapering to 7 MW as the evening sets in. Renewable penetration sits at 23.08%, well down from the overnight peak of 71.4% reached around 01:30 AEST when wind and hydro covered most of the low-demand trough. Carbon intensity has risen in step with reduced renewable output, currently at 0.6753 tCO2/MWh, up from a low of 0.2508 tCO2/MWh overnight — this evening ramp-to-peak transition is the single largest driver of intraday carbon intensity swings in NSW.
Predispatch forecasts point to continued volatility before easing. The 21:00 AEST interval is forecast at $259.93/MWh, dropping sharply to $92.72/MWh by 21:30 and turning negative (-$6 to -$9/MWh) for an extended overnight window from 22:30 through to roughly 06:00 AEST tomorrow. Prices are then forecast to recover through the morning ramp, reaching $70-84/MWh across 07:00-13:00 AEST on 4 September before easing to a stable $42.54/MWh band through the afternoon and evening. Five load-shifting windows are flagged between 01:00 and 06:00 AEST tomorrow, each offering savings of $266-269/MWh versus today's peak — attractive for any dispatchable load with overnight flexibility.
On notices, NSW carries one active non-conformance flag from 3 September (WTAHB1, 47 MW deviation, 16:40-16:50) with no ongoing operational impact. No credible contingencies or market interventions are currently active in NSW1 — the reclassified contingency events and intervention notices in the active list all pertain to TAS1 and SA1. Worth flagging for planning purposes: AEMO's MarketNet maintenance window today, 10:00-17:00 AEST, may briefly affect L2L VPN connections routed via the QLD datacentre; participants should confirm failover to the NSW termination point beforehand.
