Regional Outlook — NSW1: Sunday 30 August 2026
NSW spot price sits at $100.84/MWh as at 06:30 AEST, tracking near the middle of a volatile 24-hour band that swung from -$9.57/MWh overnight (04:05 AEST oversupply period) to a peak of $116.02/MWh around 01:05 AEST evening demand ramp. Demand currently reads 8,459 MW, up sharply from the overnight trough of ~4,100 MW recorded between 02:00-04:30 AEST. Prices firmed through the morning as demand climbed off the minimum, hitting the $95.20-$112 range for most of the 09:00-14:00 AEST window before easing into the $84-105 band through the evening peak.
The generation mix at the current interval is led by black coal at 5,719 MW, followed by hydro at 914 MW, battery storage at 665 MW, wind at 397 MW, solar at 89 MW, and gas OCGT contributing a modest 47 MW, with gas CCGT offline. Renewable penetration sits at 26.4%, having climbed sharply from a low of around 13.3-14% during the 17:00-19:00 AEST evening peak as wind and battery output picked up into the overnight period. Carbon intensity reads 0.647 tCO2/MWh, down from a daily high of 0.761 tCO2/MWh at 18:30 AEST and well above the overnight low of 0.376 tCO2/MWh recorded around 01:00-02:00 AEST when renewable share peaked near 57%.
Predispatch forecasts point to a sharp price escalation through tomorrow's morning ramp: prices are expected to fall to near-zero or negative overnight (-$4/MWh around 03:00-05:00 AEST tomorrow, consistent with the low-demand, high-renewable overnight pattern), before surging to a forecast peak of $142.90/MWh at 08:00 AEST and again at 10:00-10:30 AEST tomorrow as morning demand ramps against tightening supply. Prices are then forecast to ease back to the $70-84/MWh range through the afternoon and evening. Cool, overcast conditions today (8.3°C, 98% cloud cover, solar potential near zero) are constraining solar output; tomorrow's outlook improves to 29.7% average solar potential with clearing skies, which should support daytime renewable contribution.
On market notices, an AEMO MarketNet VPN security edge device upgrade is scheduled for 03 September 2026, 10:00-15:00 AEST, with possible brief connectivity interruptions to variable VPN connections — B2B and IPWAN links are unaffected. Two recent NSW-specific items are worth noting: a credible contingency reclassification on the Bayswater-Mt Piper 500kV lines due to lightning was raised and subsequently cancelled on 26 August, and inter-regional transfer limit variations on the Sydney North-Kemps Creek 330kV line and Bayswater-Wollar 500kV line have both been resolved with normal service restored. No active interventions or non-conformance declarations are currently affecting NSW1.
