Regional Outlook — NSW1: Tuesday 1 September 2026
NSW spot price sits at $85.80/MWh as at 6:25am AEST, tracking near the top of a volatile overnight range that saw prices swing from -$18.51/MWh in the 1-3am trough to a $90/MWh cap brush late yesterday evening. Demand has climbed steadily from an overnight low near 4,383 MW to 7,502 MW currently as the morning ramp takes hold — a pattern consistent with typical weekday demand build. The past 24 hours show the now-familiar overnight price collapse driven by wind output and soft demand, followed by a sharp morning price recovery as load returns and solar has yet to contribute meaningfully under 100% cloud cover.
Generation mix at 5:55am shows black coal dominating supply at 4,582.66 MW, followed by wind at 1,329.25 MW, hydro at 392.02 MW, battery discharge at 319.03 MW, gas OCGT at a modest 49.55 MW, and solar barely registering at 10.85 MW given pre-dawn conditions and overcast skies. Renewable penetration sits at 30.69%, down from an overnight peak above 68% around 3-4am when wind generation and low demand combined to push renewables well past coal's contribution. Carbon intensity has correspondingly risen to 0.6082 tCO2/MWh, up sharply from the 0.28 tCO2/MWh trough recorded in the early hours — a swing entirely explained by the demand ramp and loss of overnight wind-driven renewable share as thermal generation fills the morning peak.
Predispatch forecasts point to a firming price trajectory through the morning, with NSW expected to push to $119.01/MWh by 8:00am and hold in the $90-110/MWh band through mid-morning trade before easing to the $65-76/MWh range from midday onward. Prices are forecast to soften further into the afternoon and evening, settling around $57-66/MWh through to 6:00pm as demand tapers. Today's weather outlook supports a moderate solar contribution (avg solar potential 22.1%) and modest wind (4.5%) with a top of 26.2°C, suggesting renewable output should improve materially once cloud clears from current 100% cover.
On notices, NSW-specific items are limited to historical contingency reclassifications on the Bayswater-Mt Piper 500kV lines (now reverted) and a completed outage on the Bayswater-Wollar 5A4 500kV line. Traders should note two upcoming AEMO MarketNet maintenance windows affecting connectivity on 3 September (10:00-17:00) and 4 September (10:00-17:00), plus the MSATS FTA Release 2 change on 3-4 September that will take MSATS offline 13:00-17:00 on 3 September. No active NSW-region market interventions or non-conformance declarations are in effect; SA remains the focus of ongoing voltage-related intervention risk with a foreseeable event flagged from 10:30am today.
