NEM Overview: Sunday 30 August 2026
NSW leads NEM pricing this morning at $100.84/MWh, with VIC close behind at $95.69/MWh and WA at $95.48/MWh. SA sits well below the rest at $69.41/MWh, a spread of over $31/MWh against NSW, while QLD ($87.73/MWh) and TAS ($86.65/MWh) sit in between. Total scheduled demand across the mainland regions is running around 22,400 MW, with NSW the largest single draw at 8,459 MW. The NEM-wide grid stress score sits at 79/100, elevated for a Monday morning, though price stability at 19.4/100 points to volatility risk through the day rather than acute scarcity right now.
Generation mix reflects the seasonal pattern: black coal remains the largest single source in NSW (5,719 MW) and QLD (5,278 MW), with VIC's brown coal fleet contributing 4,290 MW. Wind output is strong in QLD (1,249 MW) and SA (790 MW), where SA's renewable penetration reads 70.6% and carbon intensity is low at 0.175 tCO2/MWh. TAS is running almost entirely on hydro (1,130 MW) and wind (224 MW), pushing renewable penetration to 91.6% and intensity down to 0.055 tCO2/MWh — the cleanest region on the grid this morning. NSW and QLD renewable shares sit near 26%, and VIC trails at 16.5% with intensity at 0.978 tCO2/MWh, reflecting its brown coal-heavy mix overnight. NEM-wide renewable penetration is tracking at 44.2%.
Batteries are active across every mainland region — NSW (665 MW), VIC (687 MW), QLD (604 MW) and SA (176 MW) — supporting the morning ramp. Interconnector flows show NSW exporting 863 MW to QLD and importing 211 MW from VIC, while SA is importing 100 MW from VIC on the Heywood link, consistent with its lower local price. No interconnectors are currently binding. SA's forecast Minimum System Load (MSL1) event is flagged for today between 1300-1400 hrs AEST, with minimum demand expected to dip to around 168 MW at 1330 hrs — worth monitoring given the string of voltage-related interventions and directions issued to AGL's Torrens Island and Barker Inlet units in SA over the past week.
Weather supports moderate solar and low wind contribution today: NSW, SA and QLD are all forecasting good solar potential (up to 29.7% in NSW) with clear skies, while VIC and TAS face higher cloud cover (29% and 76% respectively) limiting solar output. Wind potential remains subdued NEM-wide today (below 2% in most regions), meaning thermal, hydro and battery dispatch will carry more of the midday load than wind. Separately, note the planned MarketNet VPN firewall upgrade scheduled for 3 September (1000-1500 hrs AEST) — not today's issue, but flag for participant IT teams ahead of time.
