Regional Outlook — NSW1: Friday 21 August 2026
NSW spot price sits at $90/MWh as at 06:25 AEST, holding near the middle of an overnight range that swung from $28-99/MWh. Demand reads 7,342 MW, down from the 9,362 MW evening peak recorded around 18:05 AEST yesterday. Prices have been choppy through the early morning, oscillating between $65-90/MWh over the past two hours as demand rebuilds heading into the day — a pattern consistent with the tight overnight band rather than a clear trend.
Generation mix currently shows black coal dominant at 5,056 MW, wind contributing 958 MW, hydro at 387 MW, batteries at 167 MW, gas OCGT at 44 MW, and solar at just 40 MW given the pre-dawn hour. Renewable penetration sits at 23.3%, down from a peak of 46.5% around 01:30 AEST when wind and low overnight demand combined to lift renewable share. Carbon intensity tracks at 0.673 tCO2/MWh, up from an overnight low of 0.470 tCO2/MWh — the inverse relationship between coal's overnight baseload share and renewable output is playing out clearly in today's carbon curve.
Predispatch signals a sharp price escalation ahead. Forecasts show prices holding in the $24-38/MWh band through to 06:00 AEST, then climbing steadily from 07:00 AEST ($71/MWh) through the morning to a forecast peak of $294.65/MWh at 13:00 AEST, with elevated prices persisting into the $230-250/MWh range through early afternoon before easing to $98/MWh by 18:00 AEST. This trajectory reflects tightening supply-demand balance through midday, with today's weather outlook showing strong solar potential (29.5% average) but only 0.8% average wind potential — a low-wind day that removes a key generation source during the afternoon price risk window. Traders should note the batch of low-price, low-carbon overnight load-shifting windows between 01:00-06:00 AEST, each offering $265-271/MWh savings versus the forecast peak.
On notices, NSW-specific items are limited to completed network work: the Vineyard to Sydney West No. 29 330kV line returned to service at 17:00 AEST yesterday, and the Kemps Creek-Sydney North No.14 330kV line outage concluded on 19 August. A short-notice outage on the Lismore-Koolkhan 967 132kV line remains active, invoking constraint set N-KKLS_967 on the NSW-QLD interconnector. No credible contingency events or AEMO interventions are currently active in NSW1 — active reclassifications are confined to TAS1 (lightning-related, Tungatinah-Waddamana lines).
