NEM Overview: Wednesday 19 August 2026
NEM spot prices sit in a tight band this morning, with mainland regions clustered between $74-83/MWh: NSW1 leads at $83.36, VIC1 $80.67, SA1 $80.53, TAS1 $75.62, and QLD1 the softest at $74.15. WA1, on its separate SWIS market, prints well above the pack at $128.46/MWh, continuing the persistent premium that market outside the interconnected NEM typically carries. Demand is heaviest in NSW1 at 8,640 MW and QLD1 at 6,759 MW, with SA1 the smallest load centre at 1,381 MW. This is a low-volatility start to the day — the gridIQ price stability score sits at just 23.7, reflecting how compressed the regional spread is right now rather than any acute stress.
Generation mix shows coal still anchoring the two largest regions: NSW1 black coal at 5,554 MW and QLD1 black coal at 5,285 MW, with VIC1 brown coal at 3,898 MW. Wind output is strong across the board — QLD1 1,421 MW, VIC1 1,367 MW, NSW1 1,197 MW, SA1 505 MW, and TAS1 358 MW on top of its 868 MW hydro base. Solar is negligible everywhere at this hour, as expected pre-dawn. Batteries are contributing meaningfully to firming, led by QLD1 at 702 MW and NSW1 at 451 MW. Renewable penetration by region ranges from TAS1's 90.8% (hydro-dominated) and SA1's 62% down to QLD1 28.9% and NSW1 29.4%, giving a NEM-wide renewable penetration score of 46.8%. Carbon intensity mirrors this spread: TAS1 sits at just 0.06 tCO2/MWh against VIC1's 0.84 tCO2/MWh.
Grid stress reads elevated at 77.6, consistent with several live network constraints. NSW1-QLD1 flow sits at -765 MW (import to NSW1) against a -1,244 MW limit, still comfortable but worth watching given the N-SWVY_29 constraint from Wednesday's unplanned Sydney West-Vineyard 330 kV line outage remains active. Basslink is also constrained (I-VT_000) after reaching a technical limit, capping Tas-Vic flow at 213 MW against a 428 MW export limit. VIC1's Eildon-Mt Beauty 220 kV lines had a lightning-related contingency reclassification cancelled overnight, removing that constraint risk. Traders should also note AEMO's MT PASA notice flagging a Low Reserve Condition forecast for SA1 in July 2028 — a longer-horizon reliability flag, not an immediate concern for today's dispatch.
Weather today offers limited renewable upside: cloud cover is heavy in VIC1 (87%) and SA1 (99%) this morning, capping solar potential, though NSW1 and QLD1 see moderate solar potential build through the day (7.3 and 10.6 respectively) as skies partially clear. Wind potential is subdued nationwide (below 2% in most regions), suggesting thermal and hydro/battery dispatch will continue carrying the bulk of the load through today's peak demand periods.
