NEM Overview: Monday 17 August 2026
NSW1 leads NEM pricing at $70.31/MWh this morning, with QLD1 close behind at $64.93/MWh, while VIC1, SA1 and TAS1 sit in a tight $35-36/MWh band. WA1, on its separate SWIS market, is trading well above the eastern states at $132.41/MWh. The NSW-QLD spread of roughly $5/MWh reflects the binding VIC1-NSW1 interconnector, currently flowing 808 MW northward at its export limit — VIC1 is exporting into NSW1 to help meet demand, which sits at 8,958 MW in NSW1 against 6,207 MW in VIC1.
Generation mix shows sharp regional contrasts this morning. SA1 is running on wind almost exclusively (1,127 MW) with negligible gas backup, delivering a renewable penetration of 96.1% and carbon intensity of just 0.019 tCO2/MWh — the cleanest region on the NEM right now. TAS1 follows at 87.3% renewable penetration, hydro-dominated at 646 MW plus 203 MW of wind. VIC1 sits at 40.2% renewable penetration, with brown coal (4,293 MW) and wind (2,871 MW) as the two dominant sources. NSW1 and QLD1 trail on renewable share at 23.5% and 21.2% respectively, with black coal supplying the bulk of load in both regions (5,352 MW and 5,207 MW) alongside solid wind contributions (1,172 MW and 1,292 MW). Solar output is minimal NEM-wide at this hour, consistent with early morning conditions and NSW1's current 100% cloud cover.
NEM-wide renewable penetration reads 45.7% on the composite score, with grid stress elevated at 78.9 — worth watching given the VIC1-NSW1 interconnector is already binding at its 808 MW export limit. Price stability sits mid-range at 51.6, reflecting the wide NSW1-to-VIC1/SA1/TAS1 spread rather than any single extreme move. No active AEMO interventions or non-conformance events are in force this morning; the most recent notices show the Palmwoods-South Pine 275kV line in QLD1 returning to service yesterday evening, clearing the associated constraint set. A standing low reserve condition remains flagged for SA1 in July 2028 per the latest MTPASA — a longer-term reliability signal rather than a today concern.
Today's outlook favours continued NSW1 price leadership through the morning, with solar potential low across the eastern seaboard until cloud clears — NSW1 forecast shows solar potential rising to 15.8% tomorrow but only 0.4% today. SA1 and TAS1 wind potential remains moderate (7.4% and 9.3% respectively), supporting continued high renewable output in those regions through the day. Traders should watch the VIC1-NSW1 interconnector for any further binding constraints as NSW1 demand builds through the morning peak.
