NEM Overview: Sunday 16 August 2026
NEM spot prices sit in a tight $51-58/MWh band across the eastern states this morning, with WA1 the outlier at $85.64/MWh on separate market rules. NSW1 leads at $57.92/MWh against 8,701 MW demand, followed by QLD1 ($54.75/MWh, 6,549 MW) and VIC1 ($54.70/MWh, 6,328 MW). SA1 ($51.78/MWh) and TAS1 ($53.30/MWh) trade at the bottom of the range. The narrow $6/MWh spread between mainland regions points to well-connected interconnector flows and no material congestion this morning — VIC1-NSW1 is flowing 241 MW north, NSW1-QLD1 is flowing 409 MW south into NSW, and none of the six interconnectors are binding.
Renewable penetration is uneven across regions. SA1 is running at 97% renewable with wind alone contributing 1,361 MW against just 1,439 MW total demand, and carbon intensity there is negligible at 0.0147 tCO2/MWh. TAS1 sits at 82.5% renewable, driven by 798 MW of hydro. NSW1 (28.5%), QLD1 (26.5%) and VIC1 (21.5%) show lower renewable shares, with black coal (5,480 MW) and brown coal (4,599 MW) covering the bulk of NSW1 and VIC1 demand respectively. Carbon intensity is highest in VIC1 at 0.956 tCO2/MWh, reflecting brown coal's dominant share of that region's mix this morning. The NEM-wide renewable penetration score sits at 44.8%, with the grid stress score elevated at 87.4, consistent with cool conditions and steady heating demand across NSW1, VIC1 and TAS1 this morning (7-12°C).
Weather outlook for today shows limited solar contribution across the NEM, with cloud cover at 58-100% in the southern states and solar potential near zero currently, though NSW1 and QLD1 should see some midday solar pickup. Wind potential is muted everywhere except SA1's current 1,361 MW output. Traders should note several active AEMO notices: an inter-regional transfer limit variation remains in place from the 15 August Lismore 132kV line outage (constraint N-LSLS_9U8, affecting NSW-QLD flows), and Directlink control remains unavailable in NSW since 14 August under constraint I-CTRL_ISSUE_TE. A planned outage on the Liddell-Tomago 330kV line is scheduled to end at 1700 hrs today. Separately, AEMO's MT PASA has flagged a Low Reserve Condition risk for SA1 in July 2028 — a longer-term reliability signal rather than an immediate concern for today's trading.
