NEM Overview: Saturday 15 August 2026
NEM spot prices sit in a tight $66.65–$82.44/MWh band early this morning, with WA1 topping the range at $82.44/MWh and TAS1 the softest at $66.65/MWh. NSW1 trades at $78.86/MWh against total demand of 7,595 MW, the highest load of any region, while QLD1 ($68.84/MWh, 5,751 MW) and VIC1 ($69.35/MWh, 5,340 MW) sit mid-pack. SA1 ($67.88/MWh, 1,289 MW) is notable less for price than for mix — wind is supplying 1,040 MW against only 1,289 MW total demand, pushing renewable penetration to 89.1% and carbon intensity down to 0.053 tCO2/MWh, easily the cleanest region on the grid this morning. The overall spread of roughly $16/MWh across mainland regions is narrow and unremarkable, suggesting interconnectors are doing their job — NSW1-QLD1 is flowing 778 MW into NSW1, VIC1-NSW1 is exporting 639 MW northward, and none of the six interconnectors are currently binding.
Generation mix reflects cold, overcast conditions across the southern states. Solar output is negligible-to-zero in VIC1, SA1 and TAS1 given cloud cover of 95–100% and near-zero solar potential readings, while NSW1 solar sits at just 113 MW. Coal continues to underpin NSW1 (5,082 MW black coal) and QLD1 (5,094 MW black coal), with VIC1 leaning on 4,610 MW of brown coal. Wind is the standout renewable contributor nationally: QLD1 (1,392 MW), SA1 (1,040 MW), VIC1 (817 MW) and NSW1 (660 MW) are all seeing solid wind output despite low wind-speed readings at surface level in some regions. TAS1 hydro (984 MW) keeps that region's renewable penetration at 83.1% and intensity at 0.110 tCO2/MWh, the second-cleanest region. NSW1 and QLD1 renewable penetration trail at 20.4% and 21.3% respectively, VIC1 lowest at 15.6%, reflecting the coal-heavy, low-solar conditions this morning.
The NEM-wide renewable penetration score reads 38.9% and grid stress is elevated at 74.4, consistent with cold morning demand and constrained interconnector flows in NSW. Traders should note an active inter-regional transfer limit variation from a short-notice outage of the Lismore 132 kV line (constraint N-LSLS_9U8, invoked 15 August, still active), which affects the NSW1-QLD1 interconnector via N-Q-MNSP1. Directlink control remains unavailable in NSW (constraint I-CTRL_ISSUE_TE active since 14 August), while the earlier Murraylink control issue in SA has been resolved and its constraint revoked. A standing MTPASA low reserve condition notice flags a potential SA1 reliability gap in July–August 2028 — not an immediate market driver today, but worth keeping on the radar for longer-dated positions.
Looking at today's outlook, cloud cover is forecast to ease slightly through the day (NSW1 and VIC1 cloud dropping to around 41–52% average), lifting solar potential modestly into the mid-teens for QLD1 (23.6%) and TAS1 (15.7%). Wind potential stays subdued across the board, so coal and hydro generation will likely continue carrying baseload through the day, with no major price stress signals evident beyond the current grid stress reading.
