Queensland's generation mix combines a large black coal baseload fleet with Australia's fastest-growing solar capacity. Major coal power stations including Gladstone, Callide, Stanwell, and Kogan Creek supply the bulk of overnight generation, while the state's extensive solar resources — both large-scale farms and the highest rooftop solar penetration per capita in Australia — dramatically reshape the daytime mix.
During peak solar hours (10:00-14:00 AEST), solar generation can supply 30-50% of Queensland's electricity, displacing coal output and pushing prices to very low or negative levels. The evening transition as solar drops off is one of the most challenging periods for grid management, requiring coal plants to ramp back up quickly.
Gas-fired generation, influenced by Queensland's LNG export industry, provides flexible supply. Wind farms contribute a smaller but growing share, primarily from facilities in the Darling Downs and Far North regions.
