Regional Outlook — NSW1: Saturday 8 August 2026
NSW spot price sits at $76.29/MWh as at 06:30 AEST, easing from the overnight evening peak that touched $117.07/MWh around 16:50-16:55 UTC (02:50-02:55 AEST) during the demand ramp toward 10,112 MW. Prices have moderated steadily through the morning session — from the $97-110/MWh band overnight down to the mid-$70s now — tracking the demand pullback from the ~10,000 MW peak to 7,956 MW currently. Overnight troughs saw negative pricing as low as -$6.07/MWh around 04:50-05:15 AEST as wind generation and low demand combined.
Generation mix is dominated by black coal at 5,219.83 MW (79% of the current 6,647 MW total), with wind contributing 878.5 MW, hydro at 362.54 MW, solar at 132.95 MW, gas OCGT at 45.13 MW, and battery output at just 8.35 MW. Renewable penetration sits at 20.8%, up from an overnight peak of 52.86% around 02:00 AEST when wind and hydro carried a much larger share while coal units backed off. Carbon intensity currently reads 0.6954 tCO2/MWh, near the daily high band (0.70-0.75 tCO2/MWh) seen through the afternoon and evening peak periods, in contrast to overnight lows of 0.414 tCO2/MWh when renewable share was highest.
Predispatch forecasts show prices holding in the $65-84/MWh range overnight before firming to $86.92/MWh by 07:30 AEST and $88.89/MWh through the 08:00-09:30 AEST window tomorrow morning, consistent with the typical demand ramp. Prices are then forecast to ease back to the low $40s/MWh by mid-afternoon (14:30-18:00 AEST), aligning with load-shifting windows identified for tomorrow — notably 15:00-17:00 AEST and 17:30-18:30 AEST, both averaging $42.7-42.8/MWh with zero carbon intensity flagged, offering low-risk demand-shifting opportunities worth roughly $46/MWh in savings versus peak pricing.
On notices, NSW carries an active automated constraint set (CA_SYDS_59839EB2) invoked since 08:15 AEST on 4 August, managing power system security via the N-Q-MNSP1/NSW1-QLD1 interconnector — still in force with no cancellation issued. A QLD-region unplanned outage at Tarong (275kV CB) triggered the Q-HATR constraint set affecting the same interconnector equations from 08:55 AEST 8 August. Weather today is cool and heavily overcast (98% average cloud cover forecast, min/max 8.5-17.9°C), suppressing solar potential to near-zero and keeping wind potential modest at 4.8%, reinforcing coal's dominant share through the daylight hours. No active market interventions or non-conformance notices are currently recorded for NSW1 itself.
