Regional Outlook — NSW1: Friday 7 August 2026
The NSW spot price sits at $109.96/MWh at 06:30 AEST, easing from the $146-167/MWh peak that hit between 17:45-18:00 AEST last night during the evening demand ramp. Demand currently reads 8,459 MW, well down from yesterday's evening peak above 10,950 MW, but climbing again this morning as the region moves through its typical Saturday demand curve — overnight prices troughed into negative territory (-$4.30/MWh) around 13:10-13:20 AEST as low demand met continued baseload output.
Generation mix at 06:30 AEST is dominated by black coal at 5,663 MW, with hydro contributing 606 MW, battery storage at 435 MW, gas OCGT at 43 MW, wind at 42 MW, and solar just beginning to ramp at 122 MW ahead of sunrise. Renewable penetration sits at 17.43%, down sharply from the overnight peak of 52.49% recorded around 01:55 AEST when wind and low demand combined to lift renewable share. Carbon intensity has correspondingly risen to 0.7252 tCO2/MWh, up from an overnight low of 0.4174 tCO2/MWh, tracking the inverse relationship between renewable output and coal-heavy morning generation.
Predispatch forecasts show prices holding in the $110-130/MWh band through the morning peak, with a step up to $122-135/MWh expected between 08:00-11:00 AEST as demand builds. Prices are then forecast to ease through midday and afternoon, dropping to $70-85/MWh by 14:00-16:00 AEST before a mild evening firming to around $73-80/MWh into the 18:00 AEST period — a notably flatter evening profile than yesterday's sharp peak. Today's weather outlook shows cool conditions (6.4-16.6°C), light wind potential (1.3%), and moderate solar potential (20.9%), consistent with the muted renewable contribution expected through the day.
On notices, an inter-regional transfer limit variation remains active for the NSW1-QLD1 interconnector (constraint CA_SYDS_59839EB2, invoked from 08:15 AEST on 4 August) to maintain power system security in the NSW region — this remains in force with no cancellation notice issued. No new NSW-specific non-conformance or contingency declarations have been issued in the past 24 hours; recent NSW-related notices (Bayswater-Mt Piper 500kV line reclassifications) have been cancelled. Overnight low-price windows between 01:00-05:00 AEST (as low as $13.20-31.46/MWh) offered strong load-shifting value, with the 03:00-04:00 AEST window flagged as the cheapest opportunity today at $13.20/MWh average and zero carbon intensity.
