NSW1· NEM — 5-min dispatch intervals
Loading live FCAS data...
New South Wales is the largest NEM region by demand and hosts a substantial fleet of FCAS-capable generators. The state's coal-fired power stations — including Eraring, Bayswater, and Mt Piper — provide significant contingency FCAS capacity, while pumped hydro at Tumut and Shoalhaven contributes high-quality regulation services.
As NSW transitions toward higher renewable penetration, FCAS markets are evolving. Battery storage projects entering the market are competing with traditional thermal generators for regulation and fast contingency services, often at lower marginal costs. This competition is reshaping FCAS price dynamics in the region.
NSW FCAS prices are set every five minutes through AEMO's co-optimised dispatch process, which simultaneously clears energy and all eight FCAS markets. Constraints on interconnectors to Queensland and Victoria can isolate NSW's FCAS market, occasionally causing significant price separation between regions.
